Our Path to Net Zero: Energy and Climate Action at TIMCO

As part of the Bufab Group, TIMCO is committed to operating responsibly and reducing our environmental impact. Here's how we’re working to cut emissions across every part of our business.

What does Net Zero mean?

Net zero means achieving a balance between the greenhouse gases produced by human activity and those removed from the atmosphere. It's not simply about switching off the lights, it requires a systematic, measurable approach to understanding and reducing emissions at every level of an organisation.

At TIMCO, our journey is guided by Bufab Group’s commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), aligning our emission reduction target in line with the Paris Agreement's goal to limit global warming to below 1.5°C. Through this commitment we actively work to measure and then reduce our scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. The Science Based Targets are as follows:

  • To reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions to zero by 2030.
  • To reduce Scope 3 emissions by 55% by 2031 from our 2021 baseline.
  • Net Zero by 2050.

Understanding Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions

To track progress, it's important to understand the three categories of greenhouse gas emission that a business is responsible for.

Scope 1 - Direct Emissions

Emissions we produce directly, for example from company vehicles and on-site fuel use.

Scope 2 - Indirect Emissions

Emissions from the energy we purchase and consume, such as the electricity powering our sites.

Scope 3 - Supply Chain Emissions

Emissions across our entire value chain, from our suppliers upstream to our customers downstream. Scope 3 is typically the largest contributor for businesses like ours, which is why supplier engagement and smarter procurement are central to our strategy.

We’re proud to be part of the Bufab group as it has once again been awarded the highest score – A – in CDP’s Supplier Engagement Assessment.
This recognition confirms strong commitment to:

-            Responsible sourcing

-            Climate action

-            Close collaboration across our global supply chain

CDP’s assessment evaluates how companies engage suppliers on governance, targets, Scope 3 emissions, and collaboration. Achieving an A score places Bufab among the top performers globally.

On going activities to reach our target:

  • Transition company vehicles to hybrid or electric
  • Switch to renewables such as biogas and solar
  • 100 percent certified green electricity across UK sites
  • Choose green transport options and work with freight suppliers to obtain data
  • Moving to weight-based carbon reporting for improved accuracy
  • Work with suppliers to reduce emissions and transition to more sustainable practices

In our next sustainability blog, we will be exploring circularity. We'll be covering how we're reducing imported plastics and plastic packaging, increasing recycled materials, and improving packaging across the supply chain.
