From Waste to Value: How TIMCO is Driving Circularity

Most products follow a straight line: made, used, then thrown away. A circular approach breaks that pattern, keeping materials moving in a loop, reused, recycled and given new life, so they never become waste in the first place.

We're proud to be ISO 14001 certified, alongside our existing ISO 9001 certification.

ISO 14001 is the international standard for environmental management. Achieving it demonstrates our commitment to reducing our environmental impact and continually improving how we manage waste, energy use, and sustainability. For our customers, it’s the confidence that we’re actively monitoring our performance and improving on a continuous basis. It also forms part of the wider Bufab Group commitment to responsible, low impact operations.

Preparing for a Circular Future

Recent changes in packaging regulations are accelerating the shift towards a more circular economy.

For TIMCO, this means reviewing our packaging material choices with sustainability front of mind, considering options that balance performance, durability, and recyclability.

Meeting increasing regulatory requirements and recycled content targets starts with having reliable data. Having a clear picture of what goes into our packaging, right down to component level, helps us identify areas for improvement.

We’ve recently reviewed packaging data across our supply chain for the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), giving us better understanding of how the changing requirements and targets may affect our packaging material selection and processes in the future.

For the UK's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements, we've been detailing our packaging components and reviewing materials, labelling, and recyclability, all while looking to reduce our overall packaging footprint.

As packaging regulations develop, we will continue to review our data, supplier information and materials to make responsible, informed decisions while maintaining the quality and performance our customers rely on. This includes working with suppliers to find the most efficient way to pack products into cartons and onto pallets, reducing wasted space, cutting the number of shipments, and lowering footprint.

Behind the Scenes: Circularity in the Warehouse

Our packaging work doesn't stop at the products themselves. We're making changes right across our operations:

  • Switching to paper void-fill in place of plastic for outbound orders.
  • Sending goods to some customers in reusable totes rather than single-use cartons.
  • Recycling our own cardboard and plastic waste, from both the warehouse and the office.

Circularity isn't a one-off project with a finish line; it's a way of working that shapes the decisions we make every day.

Our next blog we be looking at business ethics and social responsibility, along with our sustainability priorities for 2027.
